In 1959,Ryan created a new kind of doll that could be bent and twisted. She was named Barbara Millicent Roberts, a. k. a Barbie. Mattel sold 3,00,000 doll in the first year itself. Today, three Barbie dolls are sold in the world every second.

Why do some people hate Barbie?
The fist Barbie dolls were all tall, slim and white with blonde (golden) hair. Parents feared that it would put wrong concepts of beauty into their children's mind.
A study showed that 6 to 8 year-old girls who play with Barbie, feel that their own bodies are not good enough. This leads to poor self-esteem. Research has also shown that If an actual woman had Barbie's body, she would be extremely unhealthy. She wouldn't have to option to walk!
In any case, that not all. Mattel created a dieting Barbie doll with a book titled 'Don't Eat!'.And a talking Barbie said,"Maths is tough"Mattel obviously hadn't heard of our Shakuntala Devi!
What did Mattel do right?
Barbie has had over 200 careers over the years. Even at a time when most women stayed home after marriage, she was a model of financial independence. There was an astronaut Barbie 13 years before NASA accepted women for space travel. She has had every job from firefighter to CEO to American President and Vice President.
How did Mattel try to improve?
1.Different skin tones
In 1968, Civil Rights movement against racism was at its height in the US. And Mattel introduced the first true black doll-Christie. Hispanic, Asian and Native American dolls followed.
Later, Barbies with different body types were introduced -healthy -looking, really tal, less tall etc. More skin tones and hair types were also tried. Their 2017 collection was diverse, with dolls of 11 skin tones, 28 hairstyles and 7 body types

2.Specially-abled
Mattel's most notable creations were the specially -abled Barbies. These dolls came in a wheelchair, with a hearing aid,or with a prosthetic leg. Barbies with vitiligo (loss of skin colour), Down syndrome, and albinism (little or no melanin) also arrived.
3.Positive attitude
The chemotherapy (cancer treatment) Barbie, Ella, did not have any hair on her head. It brought joy to kids suffering from cancer, vitiligo, or disability, to see a Barbie that looked just like them. In 2019,55%of the Barbies sold were from the diversity range. More and more children wanted dolls that resembled them. Not something unreal.
Barbies of the real world
Mattel finally realised that girls need female role models from real life. So, they started creating Barbie -versions of women achievers.
"Barbie Sherose"and "Barbie Inspiring Women "series were released. Did you know that there is a J. K. Rowling Barbie? Jane Goodall (primatologist), Naomi Osaka (tennis player), Frida Kahlo (artist), Misty Copeland (ballet dancer), Ibtihaj Muhammad (Olympic fencer) Ava DuVernay (filmmaker), Amelia Earhart (pilot) etc. are a few of those heroes. Poet Maya Angelou Barbie holds a tiny version of her memoir, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
